SOC

Balanced operation model of self-funding and government resources

The School is dedicated to attracting private resource investment through interdisciplinary programs combined with the research center and ILP to form a large-scale and robust R&D team. By strengthening the R&D outcomes in specific areas with an industrial-liaison program(ILP) (Referencing MIT's Computational Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, CMU Robotics Program, Johns Hopkins University's Language and Speech Processing Center, and other internationally renowned successful cases), the School 's talent cultivation, research, and development are expected to cater to social and industrial needs. Also, sustainable cooperation can leverage the Ministry of Education resources to achieve the best outcome.

We aim to make the private enterprise's investment reach the equivalent or higher proportion of the Ministry of Education's. Achieving this goal can alleviate the government's financial burden and improve the related funds' flexibility to recruit outstanding talents.

Interior Cooperative Units

As one of the top universities in Taiwan, National Cheng Kung University proudly provides a comprehensive education environment of nine Colleges that offer students excellent interdisciplinary development conditions. The prime focus of Miin Wu School of Computing is to cultivate future social talent by conducting AI-driven interdisciplinary cooperation with leveraging the resources from other Colleges. Besides the academic support for the cooperation and exchanges with the nine other Colleges of NCKU, we offer practical medical applications and related databases for the Intelligent Biotechnology and Medicine Credit Program by holding a strong tie to National Cheng Kung University Hospital. Miin Wu School of Computing hopes to obtain achievement by sharing other centers and programs' mutual resources. Working with College X, Big Data and AI Research Center, AI programs, International Industrial Liaison Program, and Alumni Association, we are ensuring the plan is under steady implementation without disturbing each institute's administration.

Application-Oriented Research and Interdisciplinary Program Operation Framework

In response to the rapid development in social needs, we have set Miin Wu School of Computing as a soft school, meaning that there will be no departments as defined by the traditional system. Instead, interdisciplinary education will be implemented through degree programs and credit programs. We established interdisciplinary research centers under these crucial development projects (collaborated with ILP) for research conduction.
  • Credit programs emphasize the core computing curriculum and combine with the introductory courses of different disciplines to form interdisciplinary, expertise-oriented credit programs.
  • Degree programs focus on interdisciplinary master's and doctoral degrees to build students' scientific knowledge, computing skills, soft power, and the ability to integrate systems.

We believe that only a balanced combination of professional technology and soft power can effectively apply computing skills and tools to promote social well-being. This goal can only be realized by combining flexible faculty management and an interdisciplinary research environment.

Innovative International and Industrial Linkage

NCKU has maintained long-standing exchanges and collaboration with international industrial, academic, and R&D units to provide an interdisciplinary R & D education environment with a global perspective. Since President Jenny Su took office, NCKU has been investing resources (including human resources) in industrial and international exchanges, hoping to create more sustainable cooperation opportunities.

SOC is expanding students' horizons and creating industrial opportunities through drawing on NCKU's experience. The School is also having internationally renowned experts and scholars in the advisory committee as support for the international academic programs, ILP, and research.
